Children’s books play an important role in this process. While children’s books support language skills with the stories, pictures and impressive texts they contain, they also contribute to the process of gaining reading habits that positively affect language development.

In the process of language development, children’s books provide an ideal environment for the acquisition of basic grammar. A language’s unique sentence structure and the rules of order in syntax are among the basic building blocks of that language. The correct sentence structures and grammar rules found in the stories in children’s books help children learn language naturally through books. The way different characters in the stories express themselves and the syntax they use help children understand language rules in the right contexts. As books are read, children’s ability to understand language rules becomes easier.

Children’s books are also important tools for expanding children’s vocabulary. Supported by colorful and expressive illustrations, these books allow them to discover new words through visual and auditory learning. Through these books, children learn about different concepts, objects and emotions, while also beginning to understand how to use words. The paired dialogues, descriptions and words expressing related concepts in the stories facilitate vocabulary acquisition by progressing in the natural flow of the story.

Children’s books also develop children’s self-expression skills through stories. Stories about different characters, events and emotions contribute to children’s intellectual and emotional development. The analyses and plots within the stories facilitate children’s ability to understand and communicate situations by developing their critical thinking and problem solving skills. They transfer the situations and concepts they learn through stories to their own lives and begin to use them actively in their daily lives.

Gaining the habit of reading is a critical step in children’s language development. Children who read regularly improve their reading skills, increase their vocabulary and positively affect their academic success in the long run. On the other hand, the habit of reading also encourages a lifelong passion for learning.

Children’s books contribute positively to the language development process in various areas. Stories strengthen children’s grammar skills, enrich their vocabulary, improve their self-expression skills and support them in developing the habit of reading. Regular exposure to books and the habit of reading from an early age affects the development of language skills.

Uzm.
